I was so puzzled why this film didn't get the attention it deserved. An obvious labor of love for Kevin Spacey, this is a unique turn on the film bio genre. Spacey directs and stars and sings and dances as Bobby Darin and I think it's one of his best performances. He really does sound like Darin and with the help of very little makeup, looks like him too.

CRADLE WILL ROCK, THE
A very entertaining film about a part of our recent past that doesn't get alot of attention; the clash of artists and powerbrokers in 1930s America. It focuses on the Federal Theater Project (a part of the WPA) that was inacted to keep the arts thriving during the depression years.
Director Tim Robbins creates a Robert Altman-like mosaic of real and fictional characters to show the conflict of 'art for the masses'. A excellent cast with standout performances by Bill Murray, Joan and John Cusack, Cherry Jones, Emily Watson and Hank Azaria.
The highlight is the recreation of Orson Welles' controversial musical, 'The Cradle Will Rock'.
An intelligent and thought provoking film.
[MORE]FFOLKS
He plays a woman-hating, cat loving, egotistical British Naval officer who specializes in covert missions. When terrorist Anthony Perkins hijacks 3 oil derricks in the North sea, ffolkes is called in to help. It's fun to see Moore in such an anti-Bond role and he has some fine comic lines.
Perkins is also fun to watch in his very over-the-top performance. A great little movie to enjoy on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It's too bad the film wasn't more successful -- it would have been nice to see further adventures of ffolkes.
[MORE]HEAVENS ABOVE!
A very witty and smart satire of the church's (Church of England in this case) role in society.
Peter Sellers plays an idealistic Vicar who is mistakenly sent to a wealthy English parish. His selfless and progressive ways start to turn the town on its ear and enrage the Anglican and town leaders. The film subtely takes on issues of race, class, poverty and (obviously) religion.
Sellers is very good in one of his earlier performances -- always smiling and optimistic as he niavely trys to change the village for the better.
An excellent little film with a big bite.

MOTHER JUGGS AND SPEED
There is a difference between irreverent and tasteless and it seems tasteless is the norm nowadays in adult or mature comedies. MJ&S is the definition of irreverent -- full of the offensive yet very funny material that is considered 'politically incorrect' today.
The film centers around a down and out private ambulance service trying to compete with another more by the book service. It stars probably the oddest movie trio, Bill Cosby, Raquel Welch and Harvey Keitel, but they have great chemistry together. Cosby is hilarious and it's nice to see him outside of his squeaky clean image.
The supporting cast is very funny also, especially Larry Hagman's sleazy Murdoch. MJ&S is laugh out loud funny at times but also has it's share of violent and dramatic moments.
Like another gem from '76, 'Car Wash', MJ&S is smartly written and a great reflection of its times.
[MORE]PLAYTIME
I discovered Jacques Tati about 10 years ago thru Turner Classic Movies (probably the best film channel still around) and I couldn't believe I had never heard of him before that. He is a landmark filmmaker and needs to be remembered alongside such comic greats as Chaplin and Keaton.
There are no other films comparable to Tati films -- they are meticulously made observations of everyday life usually told thru the experiences of Tati's alter ego, Mons. Hulot.
'Playtime' is undeniably Tati's masterpiece. It has many levels; a slapstick comedy, a social commentary and a satire of modern life. The 'plot' (a word used loosely in Tati films) centers around Hulot trying to make an appointment in downtown Paris. The film focuses on the modern Paris -- full of cold, steel buildings and the so-called progress of the modern age.
[MORE]POINT BLANK
Right from the beginning, you realize this is a different kind of film. The flashbacks within a flashback require complete attention, but it is definitely worth it.
An intelligent thriller about revenge and retribution, the film takes on a very surreal feel; is what we're seeing really happening or is it a dream...?
Lee Marvin gives a great icy cool performance -- I think it's his best. The supporting cast is also good, including the incredibly beautiful Angie Dickinson. John Boorman's direction and Johnny Mandel's score are terrific as is the smart script.
I have seen this film about 4 times and still find new things everytime. An underrated classic.

SILENT RUNNG
'Silent Running' is one of the best pre-'Star Wars' sci-fi films that dealt with serious social and environmental issues of it'sday.
Much of the sci-fi in the late 60s and early 70s had pessimistic views of the world's future and were very dark in tone. This film is not that different but it does have a somewhat hopeful message. In the film, earth has lost all its plantlife due to pollution. Some plantlife has been preserved in geo-domes attached to a fleet of space freighters orbiting around Saturn.
The plan is to re-forest the Earth but the mission is cut short and the crew is told to abandon the domes in space. Bruce Dern is the one crew member who decides to take matters into his own hands and try to save the forests.
I think this is one of Dern's best performances....

WEDDING, THE
Similar to Altman's 'Nashville' in its satire of American society, Altman shows us the wedding of a young couple and the reception that follows. We meet the many dysfunctual members of the groom's and bride's families (one priviledged, one not) and find out about the many skeletons in their closets.
One of Altman's trademarks is his overlapping of dialogue, which make his films seem so real. Althought there is a script, much of the dialogue is improvised by the very talented cast. There are about 40 different speaking parts in the film and you really get the feeling that you are there milling around with the other guests at the party; eavesdropping on the multiple conversations.
The large and diverse cast (another Altman hallmark) includes Carol Burnett, Mia Farrow, Lauren Hutton, Pam Dawber, Paul Dooley and Lilian Gish. Altman films definitely are an aquired taste (it took me years to really appreciate his work), but they are always entertaining, able to make an important statement on American life and are great for repeat viewings.
[MORE]WIZARDS
Classic, cult, animated Ralph Bakshi film still holds up well today. In this age of cookie-cutter, Pixar-style dominated animated films, it's refreshing to go back and see the innovative films of Bakshi.
The story borrows a lot from Tolkien's world, but Bakshi throws in some great 'modern' touches and social commentary. Admittedly an anti-Disney film in it's approach and technique -- it contains some great imaginative scenes, beautifully complex backgrounds and good use of rotoscoping and revamped stock footage.
Plays much better with repeat viewings to notice the great detail in each shot. The special features are good too -- esp. the Bakshi interview in which he repeated says this is his first 'kids' film -- I would recommend NOT showing this to kids younger than 12 though...

Once relegated to the margins of society, pornography has emerged as one of the most visible and profitable sectors of the cultural industries, assuming an unprecedented role in the mainstream of our popular culture at the same time that its content has become more extreme and harsh, more overtly sexist and racist. This eye-opening and disturbing film tackles the complexity behind this seeming paradox, placing the voices of critics, producers, and performers alongside the observations of men and women as they candidly discuss the role pornography has played in shaping their sexual imaginations and relationships.
